Balanced Bites: Healthy Eating During the Holidays

That time of year is upon us when the gravy flows and the mashed potatoes pile high. Trying to maintain a healthy diet can feel more challenging around Thanksgiving and other major holidays. Not only do we find ourselves surrounded by great food, but we’re often busy! We reach for convenience foods or maybe even snag a cookie for breakfast.

Remember, food is fuel and holidays are meant to be fun! Here are a few tips to help you stay on track while enjoying all the seasons’ festivities.

  1. Practice mindful eating: Never underestimate the power of pausing and listening to your body. Midway into your meal, stop and check in on our hunger cues. Ask yourself, “Am I still hungry? Am I still enjoying this food I am eating?” You might just realize you’re getting full and running out of room for dessert! When you practice mindful eating, you also savor every bite and make the calories count.
  2. Portion control: Have you ever seen a spread of food and wanted a little bit of everything? We’ve been there too! When fixing your plate, aim for small portion sizes. A few bites of everything gives you the taste you need—and might even leave you room for seconds of your favorites!
  3. Keep your calendar in mind: Say, for example, you know that you’ll be attending a gathering in the evening and many great dishes await. For breakfast and lunch, consider smaller or healthier options to balance out your diet.
  4. Eat slowly: Getting excited about your favorite dessert can cause you to eat it fast and leave you feeling disappointed that the moment is over. It’s a simple concept, but chewing your food slowly and savoring every bite can help draw out that special treat.
  5. Don’t deprive yourself: Classifying certain foods as bad can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food in general. It’s okay to give in to those cravings if you practice the steps above and are aware of what you are eating. Instead of kicking your favorite unhealthy foods out of your diet, find a way to incorporate them. That’s the key to making it sustainable!
