Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, cubed
  • 1 cup raisins or caraway seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Use a 10-12 inch cast iron skillet lined with parchment paper and greased, or use a regular sheet pain, lined with parchment paper and grease.
  2. Whisk buttermilk and egg together.
  3. Whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl. Add in butter little by little.
  4. Stir in raisins or caraway seeds.
  5. Pour buttermilk mixture in and fold until mixture in stiff.
  6. Place flour in flat surface and roll dough with floured hands until it is in a ball. Add flour until dough is not too sticky.
  7. Place dough in skillet or sheet pain and score the dough down the middle.
  8. Bake for about 45-50 minutes, until bread is brown, and center in cooked through.
  9. Remove bread from oven and allow bread to cool for 20 minutes before transferring to another surface and enjoy.
