Ingredients
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 1/2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter, cubed
- 1 cup raisins or caraway seeds
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Use a 10-12 inch cast iron skillet lined with parchment paper and greased, or use a regular sheet pain, lined with parchment paper and grease.
- Whisk buttermilk and egg together.
- Whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl. Add in butter little by little.
- Stir in raisins or caraway seeds.
- Pour buttermilk mixture in and fold until mixture in stiff.
- Place flour in flat surface and roll dough with floured hands until it is in a ball. Add flour until dough is not too sticky.
- Place dough in skillet or sheet pain and score the dough down the middle.
- Bake for about 45-50 minutes, until bread is brown, and center in cooked through.
- Remove bread from oven and allow bread to cool for 20 minutes before transferring to another surface and enjoy.
